NQABENI, SOUTH AFRICA - AUGUST 18: Bawinile Zulu, 11, (L) with her mother on August 20, 2002 in Nqabeni, a rural area outside Port Shepstone, in Southern Natal Province, South Africa. Bawinilie was raped by a neighbor's son a couple of weeks earlier in the small village. As a traditional Zulu area, most things are solved through negotiation and compensation. The girl's father was compensated with two cows for the breaking of the girl's virginity. The 22-year old suspect is arrested and is awaiting trial. South Africa is struggling with one of the highest rates of rape against women and children in the world. (Photo: by Per-Anders Pettersson)
