Bawinile Zulu, age 11, (r) helps her mother wash the family clothes in a river on August 20, 2002 in Nqabeni, a rural area in Port Shepstone, South Africa. Bawinilie was raped by a neighbor's son a couple of weeks earlier. Most conflicts are solved through negotiation and compensation in this traditional Zulu area and the girl's father was compensated with two cows for the breaking of the girl's virginity. The suspect was arrested. South Africa has one of the highest rates of rape in the world. (Photo by: Per-Anders Pettersson)......
