Luthando Damiso, age 23, dressed in a suit and hat outside his family's shack on August 10, 2001 in the Site B section in Khayelitsha, a township about 35 kilometers outside Cape Town, South Africa. Luthando has just returned from a rural area in the Eastern Cape province where he has spent one month going trough the traditional Xhosa manhood ceremony. A ceremony done for centuries to prepare boys to go into manhood. The boys are circumcised and taught by elders during their month long stay in a hut in a rural area. He has returned to his family and has to wear these clothes in the township for about six months.
