GALUFU, MALAWI OCTOBER 16: Millenia Masaza, age 73, (R)) takes farewell of her daughter Hilda Rafael, age 32, who died of Aids a few hours earlier on October 16, 2005 in Galufu, Malawi. Female relatives and friends from the village take farewell before the coffin is closed and taken to the cemetery. The woman left two young children, and the mother now has to take care of the orphans without any income. The village has seen an increase in poverty the last few years due to drought and HIV/Aids. Southern Africa has been hit by a severe hunger crisis due to drought and poverty and government policies. An ever-increasing HIV/Aids rate adds to the misery. Malawi is one of the worst hit areas, and Galufu village is a typical small village that has become victim of this poverty spiral. (Photo by Per-Anders Pettersson)
