Luxolo Mkwelo, age 19, stands in his room after coming home from a traditional manhood ceremony on August 20, 2000 in Tshatshu, South Africa. He spent six weeks in the bush learning to be a man. He was circumcised and elders guided him during the ceremony, which is to prepare them for adulthood. Former South African president Nelson Mandela went trough the ceremony when he was young.
