BUKAVU, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO - OCTOBER 30: Woman writes notes in a book in her small house in Bukavu, DRC. She was abducted, held captive and raped by rebels in the DRC conflict. Her hands were amputated before she was finally released. She lives with her husband and four children, which is quite unusual, as many men abandon their wives or daughters if they have been raped. The DRC conflict has seen an unprecedented high rate of rape and sexual abuse of women. The culprits are both different rebel groups and government soldiers and very few are punished. About 27,000 sexual assaults were reported in South Kivu province alone in 2006, according to the United Nations. (Photo by: Per-Anders Pettersson)
