NDOLA, ZAMBIA MARCH 24: Pan-De, age 23, a Chinese supervisor, stands with unidentified Zambian workers as they toil in a copper smelter on March 24, 2007 in Ndola, Zambia. Eastern Union Limited is a China based company who buys Copper from Congo DRC, and brings it to Ndola to their Copper smelter. The smelter was shipped from China and operates 24 hours a day in an Industrial area in Ndola. The copper is eventually trucked to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and on ships to China. The Chinese industry's thirst for raw materials has seen metals prices increase a lot the last years. Tens of thousands of Chinese has come to Africa the last years to work in infrastructure projects and businesses. Chinese companies are often the lowest bidders for contracts, pricing out the more expensive European companies. The Chinese people often live where they work and rarely interact with the local population. Most Chinese don't speak English and they are mostly staying in the compounds cooking their Chinese food, and watching Chinese Television and DVDs. (Photo by Per-Anders Pettersson)...
